Saving Favorites to your H: drive

http://techtalk.chatham-nj.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/saving-favoritesFLV.flv

This brief video will demonstrate how to save Favorites stored in Internet Explorer into your H: drive.  This video is intended for employees of the School District of the Chathams.

UPDATE: As a side note, if you are familiar with the concept of social bookmarking then it is also possible for our users to save their Favorites or Bookmarks using one of these services.  One of the more popular services is delicious.com (formerly del.icio.us), which is now a part of Yahoo!.

You can also use Windows Live (from Microsoft) to save your Favorites to that website and then you can potentially have access to your Favorites on any computer connected to the Internet.  If you have a Hotmail account then you already have access to the Windows Live Favorites service.

And did you also know that Google provides a service called Google Bookmarks?  If you already have a Google Account, such as for Gmail or Google Docs, then you can use this service right away.  No matter where you may be surfing the web, your bookmarks can stay with you just by signing into Google.

Episode 9: Schoolwires Centricity – Uploading PDFs

http://techtalk.chatham-nj.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/episode9FLV_1024by768.flv

The snow has melted, the winter vacation is over, we laughed and cried with the Oscars, and the flood waters have receded – sounds like it’s time for a new episode!

We combine a few different elements into this episode, based on questions we have received either by email or in person.  How can I upload a file (like a PDF) to my web page?  How can I work with a Flex Page?  Is looking at HTML code hazardous to my health? What is the difference between a Relative URL and an Absolute URL?

As you will see in this episode, we combine these individual pieces of information into the collective pie (yum … pie) that is Episode 9.  “Master and Commander of the Web” Dan takes on our journey into the Interwebs while Erik and Steve try not get eaten by the digital natives.

Google Apps is coming!

We will be exploring the use of Google Apps for Education at the Chatham Middle School in the near future, so it would seem appropriate to show the basic idea of what Google Docs can do.  Google Docs is just one component of Google Apps.  The entire suite of Google Apps includes Gmail, Google Docs, Google Chat, and Google Video – just to name a few.

Here is a short video titled Google Docs in Plain English.

Episode 8: Schoolwires Centricity – Adding a Blog

http://techtalk.chatham-nj.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/episode8FLV_1024by768.flv

When we last left our terrific trio, they were busy adding hyperlinks to images in Schoolwires Centricity.  This week, we’ll explore how to add a blog to your Schoolwires Centricity website.  We’ll cover how to post to your blog, how to enable commenting, and how to moderate comments.  It is surprisingly easy.

During this episode, there is a bit of shenanigans that takes place.  Not that you should be surprised at that, but we did go a little crazy with the callouts and bubble pop-ups during this episode when we were experiencing our own technical difficulties.  Where are those pesky little bubbles?  Watch and find out!

Erik returns as the spokesperson of Tech Talk.  Dan reprises his role and Super Awesome Ultimate Webmaster.  And Steve is once again kicked to the curb as Chopped Liver.  Just remember that there is a lot of caffeine involved in the creation of these episodes.  Enjoy!

Tech Talk is also a YouTube Channel

Yes! We have expanded our horizons and begun posting the Tech Talk episodes that are featured on this website on YouTube. The main reason is the YouTube Channel we provide is simply direct access to the videos without all of the blog entries that you’ll find on this website. And, YouTube is accessible from any Internet enabled computer or device, which gives us the possibility of reaching a wider audience.

Episode 7: Schoolwires Centricity – Creating Links (with images)

http://techtalk.chatham-nj.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/episode7FLV_1024by768.flv

Welcome back everyone! It’s a new year and time for a new episode!

In this episode, we are going to cover the basics for creating a link in Schoolwires Centricity.  More specifically we will be creating a link using an image that we upload to our Tech Talk section page in Centricity.  We will discuss and demonstrate uploading an image, resizing an image, the importance of alternate text, and the difference between highlighting and selecting an image.

If you would like to see the current Tech Talk section page, we’ve buried it in the Staff Pages under Lafayette School.  As we add more episodes related to Centricity, that section page will get updated as well.

Episode 6: FirstClass – Installing at Home

http://techtalk.chatham-nj.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/episode6FLV_1024by768.flv

It’s a Christmas Miracle! We’ve managed to bring the computer back to life and get through post-production of Episode 6.

What’s in Episode 6? How to install FirstClass on your home computer. You have the ability to use the FirstClass client on your personal computer in the same way that you use the FirstClass client at school. This video shows you where to download the necessary file, how to install the program, and how to setup the server field.

Coupled with an earlier episode (Episode 4) you can now fully appreciate and take advantage of transferring files back and forth from home to work, and vice versa – all within FirstClass. Enjoy!

Technical Difficulties

working_on_computerAlanis Morissette once asked “Isn’t it ironic?” in a song.  We in the Tech Office are asking the same question, since the computer we use for producing our videos has crashed.  Literally, we have received one of the worst possible errors ever: the blue screen of death, or simply the BSoD.  If you have ever experienced this yourself, you can understand our pain.

To add insult to injury, we had already recorded our video for Episode 6: Installing FirstClass at Home.  But the machine had blue screened before we could get to post-production.  Ugh.

We hope to have the situation resolved in the very near future and to post at least two more episodes before the Winter Recess.  To our faithful viewers, thank you for your continued patience.

Episode 5: Creating PDFs

http://techtalk.chatham-nj.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/episode5FLV_1024by768_HQ.flv

Ever have issues sending Microsoft Word files between a Windows PC and a Mac computer?  Or how about if you have Office 2007 but everyone else has Office 2003 or Office 2000?  Or what if you have this excellent permission slip created in Microsoft Publisher – how do you distribute that to your parents when none of them can open Publisher files at home?

Perhaps you should watch this video to learn about the versatility and flexibility of the PDF: Portable Document Format.  In this episode, we cover a few scenarios on how you can create your own PDF by using a virtual printer called CutePDF.  And there are some handy PDF creation tools built into Office 2007 that may also be of use.

Special appearance from yet another computer crusader from the Geek League: Cute PDF Man!

Episode 4: FirstClass – Managing File Storage

http://techtalk.chatham-nj.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/episode4FLV_1024by768_HQ.flv

In this episode, File Storage Dan and his trusty sidekick, T-Drive Steve, come to Erik’s rescue to help him manage his files in FirstClass.  We would recommend this video for any SDOC employee or CHS student who transfers files between work/school and home.  You’ll learn how to use the File Storage feature so that you can treat FirstClass as your very own “virtual digital briefcase.”

Please, please, please STOP EMAILING FILES TO YOURSELF!  It makes T-Drive cry.

File Storage Dan, AWAY!  Whoosh!
